45-70 Government is the great American big-bore lever cartridge. Adopted by the U.S. Army in 1873 and still going strong, it throws a heavy .458" bullet that hits like a sledgehammer at close-to-moderate range. In modern lever guns like the Marlin 1895 it's a favorite for big game, bear defense and brush hunting.

45-70 ammo comes in three loading levels: mild "trapdoor" loads for original and replica 1873 rifles; standard-pressure lever-gun loads; and hot "Ruger/Marlin-only" loads for modern strong actions. Fire only what your rifle is rated for — a hot load in an antique trapdoor is dangerous.
