.44 Special is the smooth-shooting parent of the .44 Magnum. A big-bore revolver cartridge dating to 1907, it throws the same heavy .429" bullet as the Magnum at moderate velocity, giving excellent accuracy and mild, controllable recoil. It's a favorite for target work, defense and comfortable big-bore shooting.

Because the .44 Magnum was built by lengthening the .44 Special case, any .44 Magnum revolver also fires .44 Special — many Magnum owners keep .44 Special on hand for lower-recoil practice and defense. It's a genuinely pleasant big-bore to shoot.
